PETALING JAYA: Malaysia’s challenge in the singles event of the 17th SEA Junior Table Tennis championships fizzled out in the quarter-finals in Haiduong, Vietnam, yesterday.
Foh Zheng Liu, who helped the Malaysian boys bag the bronze medal in the Under-18 team event on Thursday, found Singapore’s Tay Jit Kiat too hot to handle, losing 11-8, 2-11, 11-13, 7-11.
Zheng Liu had earlier defeated Thailand’s Tanapol Sanyiwattarm in the second round.
The Under-18 girls of Lee Rou You and Ho Ying also crashed out in the quarter-finals.
Rou You lost to Thailand’s Rattanaporn Rattanavongsa 11-8, 9-11, 2-11, 11-5, 10-12 while Ho Ying was thrashed 5-11, 6-11, 6-11 by Singapore’s Isabelle Li.
However, Malaysia’s challenge in the doubles remained strong as Goh Nai Ngee-Mohd Asyraf (Under-18) and Foo Dunley-Mohd Hashri Fikri (Under-15) checked into the boys’ semi-finals.
