GEORGE TOWN: Athletes from 76 countries have confirmed participation for the 37th men’s and 17th women’s Junior World Weightlifting championships starting on June 30 in Penang.

Organising chairman Datuk Ong Poh Eng yesterday said that the eight-day challenge, which will be held at the Penang International Sports Arena (PISA), will see more than 650 athletes and officials participating.

This has come in the wake of Penang’s hosting two major international meets – the Commonwealth Weightlifting Cham-pionship in 2009 and the inaugural IWF Inter-Continental Club Grand Prix and Junior Commonwealth Championship last year.

“Our success in hosting these championships saw us getting the nod from the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) to host world junior meets,” said Poh Eng, who is also the Penang Amateur Weightlifting Association president.

“In collaboration with the Malaysian Weightlifting Federation, the Penang Sports Council and the Penang Municipal Council we are now ready to present an international event in Penang.

“I am confident this will be a rare treat, not only for the weightlifting fans here, but for all the fitness enthusiasts, as the best in the world will be on show.”

“Stars from top weightlifting countries like China, Turkey, Russia and Kazakhstan have all confirmed their entries.”

Other countries coming for the championships are Thailand, Japan, Canada, Poland, France, Eygpt, Tunisia, Indonesia, Ukraine, South Korea, Azerbaizan, Bulgaria and the US.
