Ahmad Shafie, Ju Pha take top honours as Sukma come to a close

KUALA LUMPUR: Rower Ahmad Shafie Abdul Jabar and track cyclist Ju Pha Somnet won the best sportsman and the best sportswoman award respectively of the 14th Sukma, which closed yesterday at the National Sport Council (NSC) mini stadium in Bukit Jalil.

Ju Pha bagged four gold medals in track cycling, which was contested in a velodrome for the first time in the 21-year history of the Games.

The Perlis lass emerged as the winner in the scratch, individual pursuit, sprint and 500m time trial events. She missed out on a fifth gold medal, taking the silver in keirin.


More joy for Terengganu: Rower Ahmad Shafie Abdul Jabar from Terengganu and cyclist Ju Pha Somnet from Perlis were judged the best sportsman and sportswoman of the 14th Sukma (Malaysian Games) which ended in Kuala Lumpur Sunday
Johor’s Ahmad Shafie dominated the canoe competition, bagging three gold medals, a silver and a bronze. His gold medals came from 1,000m K1, 500m K1 and 1,000m K2 races.

Ahmad Sahfie and Ju Pha received the awards from the Minister of Youth and Sports, Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek.

Also present at the closing ceremony of the Games were the NSC director general, Datuk Zolkples Embong, and deputy organising chairman Datuk Abdul Jalil Abdullah.

Shabery also presented the overall champions trophy to Terengganu chef-de-mission Datuk Wan Ahmad Wan Muda, whose contingent raked in a medal haul of 30-8-12. The 14th Sukma featured 19 sports, all of which will not be contested in the edition in Pahang next year.
