Anxious moments as Jing Yi waits for BAM verdict

PETALING JAYA: Tee Jing Yi will know on Monday if she will get to compete in the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in August.
The Badminton Association of Malaysia’s (BAM) coaching and training committee will meet to decide whether she has recovered fully to compete in the Games.
The national No. 1 women’s singles qualified for the Olympics on merit but she injured her ankle in the first leg of the national circuit in May.
If world No. 28 Jing Yi fails to get the green light, world junior champion Goh Jin Wei, who is Malaysia’s second-ranked shuttler at No. 51, will take her place.
The 25-year-old Jing Yi believes she’s on the road to full recovery, having competed in the Australian Open earlier this month.
And she will be competing in the Taiwan Open, which starts in Taipei on Tuesday.
“I’m not giving it (the Rio place) too much thought, but I’m hopeful to be fit and ready for my second Olympics in August.
“For now I’m just focused on the Taiwan Open. It’s the last tournament before the Olympics and I’m hoping to produce some good results there,” said Jing Yi, who made her Olympic debut in London in 2012.
In Taipei, Jing Yi faces a qualifier in the first round. If she wins, she is likely to meet top seed Wang Shixian of China in the second round.
Youngster Ho Yen Mei is the other Malaysian women’s singles shuttler in the fray. She meets homester Sung Shuo-yun in the first round.
National No. 2 Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin leads the Malaysian challenge In the men’s singles, He is seeded 13th and takes on Indonesia’s Firman Abdul Kholik in the first round.
The others in the fray are Goh Soon Huat, Liew Daren, Chong Wei Feng, Goh Giap Chin, Tan Chun Seang and Mohd Arif Abdul Latif.
