Mohd Lufti Othman grabbed his second gold medal in the H.H. The Amir of Kuwait International Shooting Grand Prix after claiming the boys' 50m rifle three-position event on Wednesday.
PETALING JAYA: Teenager Mohd Lufti Othman stole the show from his more experienced team-mates when he claimed a gold medal in the boys' 50m rifle three-position event in the H.H. The Amir of Kuwait International Shooting Grand Prix in Kuwait City.
The 19-year-old posted 1,124 points to deliver the third gold for Malaysia in the prestigious meet which attracted 25 countries.
Kazakhstan's Kirill Kuzmich took silver with 1,101 points while the bronze went to Qatar's Mohd Saad Almubarak, who shot down 1,088 points.
It was also the second gold for Lufti, who had won the 50m rifle prone event two days ago.
He came in fourth in the 10m air rifle on Wednesday and was delighted to provide more cheer for Malaysia as the seniors failed to make an impact at the shooting range.
Mohd Hadafi Jaafar, who bagged gold in the 50m rifle three-position event during the South-East Asia Shooting Association (SEASA) Championships in Singapore last month, failed to make the top-eight final after he was placed 19th with 1,141 points.
Muhd Zubair Mohamad was 26th with 1,120 while Hassanul Adzhar Muhamad finished a rung below on 1,118.
Lufti was happy to step on the podium twice in an overseas competition.
"This is one of my best international achievement since I took up the sport in 2010," said Lufti.
"I am happy to come out tops. Hopefully I can make the Singapore SEA Games squad. I competed in the last Games in Myanmar but did not make an impact. I am more experienced now and I hope I can prove something if I am picked."
Besides a double from Lufti, Eddy Chew also claimed gold in the boys' 50m pistol while two bronzes were contributed by Siau Cuili in the girls' 10m air pistol and Juain Izni Zamil in the girls' 50m rifle three-position.
The competition concludes today with Eddy vying for a second gold in the boys' 10m air pistol while Johnathan Wong Guanjie, Liew Tack Fai and Choo Wen Yan are down for the men's 10m air pistol.
London Olympian Nur Suryani Mohd Taibi will bid for a medal in the women's 50m rifle prone together with Haslisa Hamed, Nur Ayuni Farhana Halim and Muslifah Zulkifli.
