Faiz pecah rekod 11 tahun angkat berat

25/07/2011
Utusan Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR - Atlet angkat berat negara, Mohd.

SHANGHAI: Former top exponent R. Puvaneswaran capped a golden high in his first coaching assignment with the Malaysian juniors at the Asian Karate Championships at the Haixia Sports Centre yesterday.

Malaysia bagged two gold medals in the kumite finals of the respective cadet and junior kumite categories.

Tarshyent Paramasivam made a golden debut in the Asian meet with a gold in the boys’ cadet below 52kg kumite (14-15).

Tarshyent defeated Kazakhstan’s Yuldashev Daniyar 3-1 in the final.

Another gold medal came from R. Wugindran in the boys’ junior below 61kg (16-17) kumite category.

Wugidran, who won a bronze in his first participation in the Asian meet last year, fought his way to the gold this time with a 2-0 win over Iranian Akbary Hamed in the final.

The Asian junior meet was previously held separately but is now held together the senior championships from this year.

Malaysia also bagged two silver and four bronze medals to emerge second overall behind Japan and Iran in the Asian championships, which attracted participation from 33 countries.

The silver medals came from Prem Kumar in the boys’ junior below 55kg kumite and the junior girls’ kata team.

The bronze medals were won by P. Vashalini (girls’ cadet below 47kg kumite), Agustin Vallenda (girls’ cadet kata), Kumar Ravin Vijaya (boys’ cadet below 63kg kumite) and Goh Chan Yit (boys’ junior kata).

Puvaneswaran, who retired after bagging his second Asian Games gold medal in Guangzhou last year, is certainly delighted with the performance as he started taking charge of the kumite team last month together with another former SEA Games gold medallist S. Mahendran.

“I officially took over this month but I have helped Mahendran with the coaching and sparring of the juniors. It’s a good achievement as we have never won a gold in the cadet kumite before.

“It is a good boost to our preparations towards the World Junior Championships which will be held in Malacca in October.

“It’s the first time we are hosting the world junior meet and we want to do well as the hosts.

“All the medal winners are relative newcomers and it augurs well for us,” said Puvaneswaran.

Malaysian Karate Federation (Makaf) have also engaged a Spanish coach Antonio Oliva Seba to help prepare the trainees for the world junior meet.

“He came in as the chief consultant and was with the team one week before we came here,” said Puvaneswaran, who is staying back as some of his charges have to fight in the senior category which starts today.

- AP

Rookies Haziq and Khairul determined to compete in the Olympics

Thursday July 14, 2011

By LIM TEIK HUAT

SEPANG: Newcomers Haziq Kamaruddin and Khairul Anuar Mohd, together with seasoned campaigner Cheng Chu Sian, worked hard at the World Championships in Turin to restore the confidence in Malaysian archery by earning a coveted spot for the team at next year’s London Olympics.

And now that coach Lee Jae-hyung is looking at guiding the team to a first-ever medal at the Olympics, the two youngsters have vowed to work hard to make sure they will be part of the team on the flight to London next year.

It’s amazing what Haziq, 18, and Khairul, 20, have achieved, considering the fact that they have only just joined the elite squad and have not even competed in the SEA Games.

Haziq also pulled off a shock win over former world champion Michele Frangilli of Italy. However, he was not able to build on it and was shown the exit in the third round of the individual competition together with Chu Sian and Khairul.

The archers returned home yesterday to a special reception organised by the National Archery Association of Malaysia and the National Sports Council (NSC) for emerging as the first Malaysian athletes to qualify for the London Olympics.

The burly Haziq, who hails from Skudai, Johor, is glad to have played his part in restoring confidence in the sport after being on the verge of elimination from the Road to London programme following their failure to contribute any medals at the Guangzhou Asian Games last year.

“The coach included us for the World Championships because we did well in the Asian Grand Prix in Laos earlier in the year,” said Haziq, who has been involved in archery for the last seven years.

“That was my first international assignment for the national team. I did not have high expectations of making it to the world meet because of my inexperience.

“Even after competing at the world meet, I still feel like I am lacking in experience compared to my senior (Chu Sian).

“The challenge for me now is to improve further. I want to keep my place in the squad until the Olympics.”

Khairul too is determined to hang on to his place in the elite squad.

“I was nervous at the start of the competition as it was my first time competing on such a big stage,” said Khairul, who is from Kemaman, Terengganu.

“The coach instructed us to remain calm and not worry about the outcome. Our target was to make the top 16 of the elimination rounds as that would give us a shot at making it to the Olympics.

“We could have qualified automatically but we lost the sudden-death shootout against France. It only fired us up to make amends.

“It is everyone’s dream to go to the Olympics and it’s mine too ... we stand a chance to win a medal like other countries.”

With only 12 teams competing at the London Olympics, a first ever medal in archery at the Olympics is no pipe-dream.

Malaysia only need to win two ties to go through to the medal rounds and Jae-hyung said “a medal is possible if we can finish in the top four during the qualifying round”.

“It is easier in the team compared to the individual. But there is a lot of hard work to be done to prepare the archers to shoot consistent scores and to be among the challengers,” said the Korean.

Terengganu Sukma athletes to be offered scholarships

Monday July 11, 2011

KUALA TERENGGANU: The Terengganu state government will offer scholarship to students representing the state in the Malaysian Games, (Sukma) to pursue their higher studies, if they have yet to receive any other scholarship.

State Sports Council development officer, Shamri Hamzah said scholarship would be offered to eligible students beginning this month.

“The scholarship is an effort by the state government to help athletes maintain their excellence in sports and education,” he said in a statement here, yesterday.

Under the scholarship programme, athletes studying in sports schools would get RM60 per month while those studying in ordinary schools would get RM50.

Shamri said the state government want to produce highly educated athletes so that they can secure a bright future when they are no longer active in sports.

He added that the scholarship programme would also give parents added confidence to encourage their children to take part in sports.

He said the state government would also pay the hostel and tuition fees directly to the school involved in the scholarship programme.

“But if the student quits or dropped from the Sukma programme, the aid would be automatically terminated,” he said. — Bernama

Haziq and Khairul not assured of London spots

Friday July 8, 2011

By LIM TEIK HUAT

PETALING JAYA: Archers Haziq Kamaruddin and Khairul Anuar Mohd may have helped Malaysia clinch the maximum quota of three spots in the men’s recurve event for the Olympics next year but they are still not assured of making the trip to London.

The two new recruits to the elite squad, who are not in the Road to London programme, partnered the ever-dependable Cheng Chu Sian and lost a first round shoot-off against third seeds France in the elimination rounds. Still, they came out smiling at the end of the day.

With Olympic hosts Britain advancing to the last eight, an extra spot for the team competition was available – leading to a tussle among the first-round losers.

It was Chu Sian, Haziq and Khairul who claimed the prized ticket for Malaysia to join the likes of South Korea, the United States, France, Ukraine, Italy, China, Britain and Mexico as the first nine countries to qualify the whole team for the Olympics.

Three more teams will qualify at the world qualifying tournament in Ogden, US, next June.

But national coach Lee Jae-hyung is glad that they have accomplished their mission early.

“It is the country that qualifies for the Olympics and it is not necessary that these three will be shooting next year,” said Jae-hyung, who was also in charge when the Malaysian men made history with their first appearance at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

“The line-up for the Olympics will be based on current form and performance in training and competitions. We also have others to choose from ... it is still a year before the Olympics,” added the South Korean.

“But I’m happy we qualified the whole team this time from the world meet. This will allow us to work on finding the best archers to make up the Olympic team.”

The early qualification for the London Olympics has also boosted the archers’ confidence following disappointing outings at the New Delhi Commonwealth Games and Guangzhou Asian Games last year.

The team won only one silver medal at the Commonwealth Games and finished empty-handed at the Asiad – leading to the sport being nearly dropped from the Road to London programme.

But it’s all behind them now as Chu Sian, Haziq and Khairul begin the individual competition from today.

Ju Pha to train locally for Commonwealth Youth Games

The Star
July 4th 2011

KUALA LUMPUR: Despite not being selected to train with the senior cycling squad under national coach John Beasley in Melbourne, Australia, national cyclist Ju Pha Somnet remains psyched to train locally.

Ju Pha, 18, said she will continue training like normal and is excited to be preparing for the fourth Commonwealth Youth Games to be held in the Isle of Man this September.

"What's important is that I train diligently to do Malaysia proud at an international level," she said yesterday.

The Chuping-born athlete, who was named Best Overall Female Athlete at the 14th Sukma Games after winning four gold medals through the 3km individual pursuit, 10km scratch and sprint, and 500m time trial as well as silver in the keirin event, said she hopes to represent the country at the SEA Games in Indonesia.

Meanwhile, National Sports Council (NSC) Back Up Athletes Division director Jefri Ngadirin said they will send Ju Pha to train abroad if necessary.

"Should Ju Pha take part in an international level competition the NSC will send her to train in Europe. However, there is no need for us to do so yet.

"Beasley thinks Ju Pha fares better in the scratch and sprint and time trial events," he added.

Previously, the NSC sent three track cycling gold medallists from the 14th Sukma Games to prepare with the senior squad under Beasley in Australia.
