KUALA LUMPUR: High jumper Mohd Syazwan Ahmad is one tough cookie.
Not even an ankle injury could stop him from taking the gold medal in the 10th South-East Asian (SEA) Youth Athletics Championships at the National Sports Council (NSC) ground in Bukit Jalil on Saturday.
The 17-year-old Syazwan cleared 2.06m to retain the gold medal which he won in Myanmar last year.
The win has enabled the Kuala Lumpur-born athlete to qualify for both the Asean Schools Athletics Championships in Brunei in November and the World Youth Championships in Cali, Colombia from July 15-19. The qualifying mark for both the events are 2.06m.
The Form Five student of Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS), however, was far from satisfied with his efforts.
He had asked for the bar to be raised to 2.11m as he wanted to better his personal best of 2.10m, which he did at the Selangor Open last year.
But Syazwan failed in all three attempts.
"I could have improved on my personal best if not for the ankle injury, which I suffered two weeks ago during training. I tried hard but just couldn't do it," said Syazwan.
The Malaysian contingent did well to win five golds, eight silvers and three bronzes on the first day of the Under-17 meet.
Asnawi Hashim won the boys' 100m final in 11.04, finishing ahead of Indonesian sprinters Ogas Agfreansa (11.06) and Burhan Wardhani (11.11).
The Form Five Student of Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sports School (SSTMI) was delighted to win the gold but disappointed at failing to improve on his personal best of 10.98, which he did at the Terengganu Open last month.
"I made good progress because last year I could only manage the bronze in the event in Myanmar. I'll go all out tomorrow to bag the double in the 200m as well," said the Malacca-born, who has a personal best of 22.10.
Asnawi also bagged a silver in the boys' 4x400m relay in 3:21.40.
Malaysia's other gold medallist were Asif Rahman Jiyaudden (boys' 800m in 1:57.37); Intan Sarah Zulgafli (girls' 100m hurdles in 14.87); and Nor Amy Lieyna Ismail (girls' long jump event 5.13m).
Thailand topped the first-day medal haul with six golds, one silver and three bronzes

Izzah ends her junior days with a bang
Fourteen-year-old Izzah Amzan made a clean sweep in the MSSM rhythmic gymnastic competition with four gold medals in the apparatus finals. - YAP CHEE HONG / The Star
KUALA LUMPUR: The journey has only just begun for Federal Territory gymnast Izzah Amzan.
The 14-year-old ended her junior days at the MSSM (national schools) rhythmic gymnastics competition in style – making a clean sweep of the gold medals in all four apparatus finals – on Thursday.
After clinching top spot in the rope (13.733), Izzah suffered a 0.30-point deduction in the hoop event after mishandling the apparatus to score 12.932 points, ahead of team-mate Nur Naieme Zainul Ariffin (11.932).
After putting on an energetic and near faultless routine in the ball event, Izzah mouthed a decisive "yes" at the end.
Izzah took the ball gold medal with 14.663 points and also clinched the clubs 13.499, just a whisker ahead of Naieme (13.466). Selangor's Fong Wan Qin (12.466) took the bronze.
Selangor gave the competition a good fight, with a confident Wan Qin winning two more silvers in the ball and rope events while the spunky Tai Ushyan claimed two bronzes in the ball and hoop event.
The clean sweep helped Izzah cap a fantastic month, having won silver (ball) and bronze (individual all-around) in her first international competition at the Aphrodite Cup in Faliro, Greece, last week.
With the schools competition now over for her, Izzah is looking ahead.
"I'm really happy ... but there's still a long way to go," said Izzah, who won a total of six gold medals at the meet.
"I know the four seniors who have gone on before me, like Olivia (Tai Qing Tong) and Shasa (Shasangari Sivaneswary Nagarajan) ... they have a wealth of experience. And knowing that I'll be joining their ranks next year is a little nerve-wracking.
"It's not going to be easy making the senior grade next year, but I've got to double my efforts as even the next crop of gymnasts like Naieme, Wan Qin and Ushyan are rising fast."
Thursday's combined eight-gold haul – contributed by Izzah and pre-juniors Rayna Hoh Khai Ling (clubs, free hand, rope) and Jingle Shak Qi (hoop) – saw FT wrap up the overall title with 12 golds, nine silvers and eight bronzes. Selangor are second with a haul of 6-9-6.
The final day offers three more gold medals in the group exercise finals

Sukan Sea di Singapura khusus untuk pelapis
Sukan Sea di Singapura khusus untuk pelapis
1 Februari 2015

Another golden day for Malaysian shooters in Kuwait
BY LIM TEIK HUAT
Mohd Lufti Othman grabbed his second gold medal in the H.H. The Amir of Kuwait International Shooting Grand Prix after claiming the boys' 50m rifle three-position event on Wednesday.
PETALING JAYA: Teenager Mohd Lufti Othman stole the show from his more experienced team-mates when he claimed a gold medal in the boys' 50m rifle three-position event in the H.H. The Amir of Kuwait International Shooting Grand Prix in Kuwait City.
The 19-year-old posted 1,124 points to deliver the third gold for Malaysia in the prestigious meet which attracted 25 countries.
Kazakhstan's Kirill Kuzmich took silver with 1,101 points while the bronze went to Qatar's Mohd Saad Almubarak, who shot down 1,088 points.
It was also the second gold for Lufti, who had won the 50m rifle prone event two days ago.
He came in fourth in the 10m air rifle on Wednesday and was delighted to provide more cheer for Malaysia as the seniors failed to make an impact at the shooting range.
Mohd Hadafi Jaafar, who bagged gold in the 50m rifle three-position event during the South-East Asia Shooting Association (SEASA) Championships in Singapore last month, failed to make the top-eight final after he was placed 19th with 1,141 points.
Muhd Zubair Mohamad was 26th with 1,120 while Hassanul Adzhar Muhamad finished a rung below on 1,118.
Lufti was happy to step on the podium twice in an overseas competition.
"This is one of my best international achievement since I took up the sport in 2010," said Lufti.
"I am happy to come out tops. Hopefully I can make the Singapore SEA Games squad. I competed in the last Games in Myanmar but did not make an impact. I am more experienced now and I hope I can prove something if I am picked."
Besides a double from Lufti, Eddy Chew also claimed gold in the boys' 50m pistol while two bronzes were contributed by Siau Cuili in the girls' 10m air pistol and Juain Izni Zamil in the girls' 50m rifle three-position.
The competition concludes today with Eddy vying for a second gold in the boys' 10m air pistol while Johnathan Wong Guanjie, Liew Tack Fai and Choo Wen Yan are down for the men's 10m air pistol.
London Olympian Nur Suryani Mohd Taibi will bid for a medal in the women's 50m rifle prone together with Haslisa Hamed, Nur Ayuni Farhana Halim and Muslifah Zulkifli.
