SWIMMER Welson Sim impressed on the first day of the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing by setting a new personal best in the boys’ 400m freestyle yesterday.
The 17-year-old took almost four seconds off his previous personal best by clocking 3:55.72 to finish fifth in his heat. However, it was not enough for Welson to make the final.
The Sarawak-born posted his previous personal best of 3:59.39 at the recent Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
Welson has been improving his timing consistently in this event this year and if the swimmer progresses accordingly, he could become the next best thing among Malaysians in the freestyle event.
The Malaysia Games champion will also compete in the 200m and 800m freestyle disciplines in Nanjing. Lim Ching Hwang and Yap Siew Hui are the other Malaysians in the competition.
In badminton, Cheam June Wei opened accounts in Group C by overcoming Nepal’s Dipesh Dhami 21-13, 21-11 in 27 minutes in the boys’ singles while Lee Ying Ying thrashed Austria’s Janine Lais 21-13, 21-6 in a Group H girls’ singles match.
