KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will send a contingent of 20 athletes for the Second Youth Olympics Games which will be held in Nanjing, China from Aug 16-28.

The athletes will take part in 10 different sports. In the inaugural Games held in Singapore in 2010, Malaysia were represented by 13 athletes in six sports - athletics, aquatics, badminton, rhythmic gymnastics, sailing and weightlifting.

Pandelela Rinong bagged two silver medals in the girls' 3m springboard and 10m platform events.

In Nanjing, Malaysia will take part in aquatics, athletics, archery, badminton, gymnastics, golf, sailing, taekwondo, equestrian and shooting.

The contingent will be led by ex-Olympic shuttler Wong Pei Tty and accompanied by IOC Young Ambassador Benjamin Khor Cheng Jie from shooting.

Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) secretary general Datuk Sieh Kok Chi said they have not set any target for the contingent other than to try and match the performance at the previous Games.

"We certainly stand a chance at winning some medals as we have a slightly bigger team. But like I said there are no specific target.

"This Games are meant to unearth talents for the future. So we hope the outing will help the athletes become future stars for Malaysia," he said.

The two sports where the Malaysians are hoping to win medals are badminton and diving. The Games are for athletes below the age of 17 years.

Equestrian: Praveen Nair Mathavan (individual competition)
Gymnastics
Artistic: Loo Phay Xing (individual all-round)
Rhythmic: Tai Qing Tong (individual all-round)
Golf: Kan Kah Yan (54-hole individual stroke play & 54-hole mixed team, Low Khai Jei (54-hole individual stroke play & 54-hole mixed team)
Sailing: Nur Shazrin Mohamad Latif (one person dinghy), Asri Azman (one person dinghy)
Shooting: Abdul Hadi Abdul Malek (10m air pistol – 60 shots)
Taekwondo: Mohana Priya Mariappan (55-63kg)
