Shuttlers Start YOG Campaign On Right Path

NANJING, Aug 17 (Bernama) -- Malaysian shuttlers opened their campaign in the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) on a winning note as both the men's and women's singles players registered victories in their respective group.

Cheam June Wei, the 3/4th seed in the men's singles competition, beat Nepal's Dipesh Dhami 21-13, 21-11 in a Group C match and face Thailand's Mek Narongrit tomorrow before meeting Muhammed Ali Kurt from Turkey on Tuesday.

"I hope to maintain my form to book a berth in the quarterfinal," he told reporters after his match which lasted for 27 minutes.

In the women's singles Lee Ying Ying defeated Austria's Janine Lais 21-13, 21-6 in straight sets.

Lee will play Slovenia's Katarina Beton tomorrow before completing her Group H fixtures against Bing Jiao He of China, the second seed in the competition.

In the men's and women's singles competition that features 32 players each, would be divided in eight groups with all group winners advancing to the quarterfinal.
