YOG: June Wei closing on gold

PETALING JAYA: National top junior shuttler Cheam June Wei is just one step away from becoming the first Malaysian gold medallist at the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) when he and Ng Tsz Yau of Hong Kong smashed their way into the mixed doubles final in Nanjing.
June Wei and Tsz Yau were in sizzling form as they needed just 22 minutes to brush aside Thailand's Mek Narongrit and China's Qin Jinjing 21-11, 21-7 in the semi-finals.
June-Wei-Tsz Yau will take on either Japanese Kanta Tsuneyama and Taiwanese Lee Chia-hsin or the Sri Lanka-China combination of Sachin Premashan Dias Angodavidanalage-He Bingjiao for the gold medal today.
At the Nanjing OSC Natatorium, swimmer Welson Sim successfully erased Kevin Yeap's national record in the boys' 800m freestyle. The 17-year-old Sarawakian clocked 8:15.84 to wipe out the previous mark of 8:18.79 set by Kevin at the 2011 World Championships in Rome.

The feat, however, was just good enough to place Welson 15th out of 25 swimmers.
Lim Ching Hwang could only manage a poor 51.64 in the boys' 100m freestyle to be ranked 19th out of 37 competitors.
Yap Siew Hui also failed to impress, clocking 1:02.96 to finish 19th from 30 swimmers in the girls' 100m butterfly.
In golf, Low Khai Jei finished joint 18th in the boys' event while Kan Kah Yan was tied 22nd in the girls' event. Khai Jei carded a two-over 73 in the final round for a 218 total while Kah Yan ended with a 229 total.
Italian Renato Paratore (205) claimed the gold with Sweden's Marcus Kinhult (207) taking the silver. Myanmar SEA Games double gold medallist Danthai Boonma of Thailand grabbed the bronze.
Lee So-young of South Korea (202) bagged the girls' title by three strokes after overcoming challenges from Taiwan's Cheng Ssu-chia (205) and Supamas Sangchan (209).
Khai Jei and Kah Yan will team up for the mixed team event from Aug 24-26th.
