NANJING, Aug 26 (Bernama) -- The National Sports Council (NSC) feels the performance of young athletes at the Youth Olympic Games (YOG 2014) can be used as a yardstick to measure the junior development programmes.

NSC director-general Datuk Seri Zolkples Embong who was full of praise for the performance and achievement of junior athletes at the YOG 2014 said the achievement of young athletes showed how far our athletes can progress at the international stage.

The Malaysian contingent has thus far collected a gold, two silver and a bronze in the YOG 2014, although the NSC and the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) had not set any specific target.

Zolkples said he was proud of the achievement of athletes who won medals because some of them were merely making their debut at the international stage, including the YOG 2014.

"The achievement can be used to measure the progress of our development programmes. It can also be used as a yardstick to measure the capability of our athletes to compete against the rest of the world," he told Bernama when contacted here, Tuesday.

Malaysia's gold medal was won by shuttler Cheam June Wei in the mixed doubles competition, diver Loh Zhiayi clinched a silver and bronze from the women's individual 10m platform and 3m Springboard respectively while Muhamad Zarif Syahiir Zolkifli added a silver from the mixed pairs Recurve event at the archery range.

The achievement has also surpassed the two silver medal winning feat by diver Pandelela Rinong at the first YOG, hosted by Singapore, in 2010.
