PETALING JAYA: Mohd Firdaus Mohd Zonis got Malaysia's campaign in the Asian Cycling Championships off to a cracking start by bagging the gold medal in the men's junior 1km time trial in record breaking fashion at the Sayarka Velodrome in Astan |
The 17-year-old smashed the eight-year old Asian championship record of 1:04.517 held by Kang Dong-jin of South Korea by clocking 1:03.952 on Thursday en route to defending his Asian title.
Jung Jae-hee of South Korea took silver with 1:04.298 ahead of Ryuta Nogami of Japan, who posted 1:04.337 for the bronze.
Having broken the 1.04 barrier for the first time, Firdaus is confident of ending his final year in the junior ranks by taking the sprint and keirin titles as well.
Firdaus claimed a historic double when the Asian meet was held in New Delhi last year.
The likes of Melbourne-based cyclists Azizulhasni Awang, Josiah Ng and Fatehah Mustapa will also be competing for medals in the senior ranks.
