PETALING JAYA: Cyclist Mohd Firdaus Mohd Zonis continued his winning ways as he claimed gold for Malaysia in the men's junior 1km time trial at the Track Asia Cup at the Hua Mak Velodrome in Bangkok.

Firdaus, who claimed the bronze in the same event at the Track World Junior Championships in South Korea in August, clocked 1:08.626 to share the gold with Hong Kong's Leong Ka Yu at the 333m outdoor track on Sunday.

Firdaus, who successfully retained the 1km time trial, sprint and keirin titles at the Asian Championships in Kazakhstan in May, has recently moved to join the national elite squad in their training base in Melbourne under Australian coach John Beasley.

Firdaus has a chance to claim more glory in the sprint and keirin on Monday.

The 18-year-old clocked 11.449 to finish second fastest in Sunday's qualifying rounds for the sprint. Kang Shih-feng of Taiwan grabbed top spot with a time of 11.309.

Firdaus will fight it out with Singapore's Mohd Yusoff Mohd Elyas for a place in the semi-finals on Monday.

Malaysia's Farina Shawati Mohd Adnan finished fastest in the women's sprint qualifying rounds after clocking 12.36 to finish ahead of Thailand's Phummarin Chumchaiya (13.07).

Farina will battle it out with Tatyana Zadnepryanova of Kazakhstan for a place in the semi-finals.

Malaysia coach Junaidi Nasir is optimistic Firdaus can make it to the podium in both the sprint and keirin.

"It is an encouraging performance from Firdaus in the 1km time trial considering it is a concrete surface.

"This is the last junior meet for Firdaus and a good sign-off for him if he can win both the sprint and keirin," said Junaidi
