KUALA TERENGGANU: The Terengganu state government will offer scholarship to students representing the state in the Malaysian Games, (Sukma) to pursue their higher studies, if they have yet to receive any other scholarship.
State Sports Council development officer, Shamri Hamzah said scholarship would be offered to eligible students beginning this month.
“The scholarship is an effort by the state government to help athletes maintain their excellence in sports and education,” he said in a statement here, yesterday.
Under the scholarship programme, athletes studying in sports schools would get RM60 per month while those studying in ordinary schools would get RM50.
Shamri said the state government want to produce highly educated athletes so that they can secure a bright future when they are no longer active in sports.
He added that the scholarship programme would also give parents added confidence to encourage their children to take part in sports.
He said the state government would also pay the hostel and tuition fees directly to the school involved in the scholarship programme.
“But if the student quits or dropped from the Sukma programme, the aid would be automatically terminated,” he said. — Bernama
